Becoming a parent is always a worrying time, more so if the child is your firstborn. Parents worry about every tiny detail, such as getting the right clothes and choosing the right milk. Perhaps the most important decision when caring for your newborn is buying them the right bedding. In order to see that both your baby and yourself get a good night’ rest you must consider several aspects.
Safety
Your child’s safety if the main priority to take into consideration when buying bedding. Every parent worries over cot death and we should seek to do all we can to prevent it. Grobags, which are sleeping bags with dungaree style straps are a good way of preventing suffocation. The baby’s head and arms are outside the sleeping bag and the straps prevent them from wriggling down during the night. If you prefer a more traditional look then cellular blankets, which are woven with large gaps to allow breathability, are an alternative.
Comfort
If you want your baby to sleep well then it is imperative that you provide them with bed linen made from a comfortable material. These days there is a wide choice of available materials, but check them yourself and select one that feels extremely soft to you. The skin of newborn babies is very sensitive and anything that feels a bit rough to you will feel even rougher to them.
Warmth
Being warm enough in bed is a necessity if we are going to sleep well. However, be careful not to add too much bedding to your baby’s cot. If they are too cold then they will usually cry and let you know, but if they are too warm it is less likely they will cry, increasing the chance of cot death. Adding or removing cellular blankets is a great way to increase or reduce your baby’s temperature, whether they are sleeping in a grobag or solely under blankets.
